HALF OF THE WORLD’S GDP DEPENDS ON NATURE!

According to the most recent figures in the Living Planet Index, wildlife populations haveplunged by an average of 69% between 1970 and 2018.

The World Economic Forum estimates that roughly half of the world’s total GDP, equivalent to about $44 trillion of economic value, depends on Nature and “environmental risks could hit the point of no return.”

A SENSE OF URGENCY IN PUTTING AN END TO BIOCRASTINATION

A big rethink is in demand that will put an end to “biocrastination” (Source: Planet Tracker), as the WEF “Global Risks Report 2024” revealed that nature and climate- related risks stand out prominently.

These risks are the primary four in the next decade and include biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, critical changes to Earth systems, and extreme weather events.

The report explores the consequences of potentially passing the critical climate tipping point within the next decade, and reaching 1.5 C of global warming by the early 2030s could provoke irreversible changes in the planetary ecosystem.

ECOCIDE, THE WORD YOU NEED TO LEARN

The good news comes from the European Council. “Ecocide” is a word that hopefully will be on anyone’s lips in the near future.

The European Council has formally adopted a new environmental crime directive that includes tougher sanctions, an extended list of offences and provision to criminalise cases “comparable to ecocide”

BOARDS, IT’S TIME TO UPGRADE THE SUSTAINABILITY COMPETENCIES!

Conscious leadership is more important than ever. Boards need to step up to the challenge. The “How Competent is Your Board” report showed that only 2% of these companies stood out as “beacons of progress”, demonstrating “high levels of sustainability competency.” Over 4% of boards in the US and Europe exhibit “no evidence at all of competence in this increasingly critical area of their companies’ business.”

Around 84% of European boards have room for improvement compared to 76% across the Atlantic.

THE “S” IN “ESG” MATTERS MORE THAN EVER

The human factor makes the difference. In 2024, the European Commission proposed new regulations requiring large companies in the EU to report on their social and environmental impact, including diversity, human rights, and labour practices. Over 50,000 EU based companies and approximately 10,400 non-EU enterprises will need to comply with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
